The United States Capitol Dome is widely known as one of the most recognizable architectural features in the World, which not only crowns our most prominent government office building, but stands as a symbol of freedom and democracy throughout the world. Through a Teaming Agreement with Gilbane Building Company, and The Christman Company, The Aulson Company, LLC. (Aulson) with over a decade of experience working on the Dome, played a key role in providing expertise in environmental and worker protection, removal of existing hazardous coatings, surface preparation and repair of surface defects as well as the installation of a replacement High Performance Coating System. Throughout the performance of this comprehensive restoration of the Skirt portion of the US Capitol Dome, many challenges were encountered and overcome in order to complete this project on time, on budget, and with no incidents.

The Waschuett Dam was constructed between 1897 and 1905 and officially put in servicebetween 1906 & 1908, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This dam is partof greater Boston's water system, maintained and controlled by the Massachusetts WaterResources Authority (MWRA). Its discharge is into the Nashua River. Constructed of Graniteblocks the Dam is more than 100 feet thick at its foundation, and when it was completed in 1905,the Wachusett Reservoir was the largest public water supply reservoir in the world. At that time,the Wachusett Reservoir Dam was also the largest gravity dam in the world. The limits of thecleaning and remediation work included the complete down-stream face of the Dam which spans1,000 feet across and over 200 feet tall at its highest point. Throughout the cleaning process allwash water was required to be collected and treated prior to disposal. Particulate matter wasremoved from all wash water through the use of particulate filters and water flocculation. Modified access structures and containment enclosures were designed, fabricated and installed specifically for use on the sloped dam face. The cleaning of the Dam face additionally requiredthe removal of all efflorescence, calcification and biological staining, to ultimately restore theDam’s true beauty in form and function.
